Myth: Vitiligo is contagious and can spread through physical contact.

Fact: Vitiligo is a completely non-contagious, autoimmune condition. You absolutely cannot "catch" it from touching, hugging, sharing food, or living with someone who has the condition.

Myth: Eating fish and drinking milk together causes white patches.

Fact: This is a widespread dietary myth with no scientific basis. Vitiligo occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks melanocytes (pigment-producing cells), not because of specific food combinations.

Myth: Eating sour foods like lemon, curd, or tamarind makes vitiligo spread faster.

Fact: There is no clinical evidence linking sour foods to the onset or spread of vitiligo. While a healthy, antioxidant-rich diet supports your overall immune system, avoiding citrus fruits will not cure or stop the condition.

Myth: Vitiligo cannot be treated, and you just have to live with it.

Fact: Modern dermatology offers highly effective treatments. Through a combination of oral/topical immunomodulators, Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) phototherapy, and surgical options, we can successfully halt the spread and restore natural skin color.

Myth: Vitiligo is caused by poor hygiene or "impure blood."

Fact: Hygiene has absolutely nothing to do with vitiligo. It is an internal autoimmune disorder linked to genetics and cellular oxidative stress, not cleanliness or blood infections.

Myth: If you get one white patch, your entire body will eventually turn white.

Fact: Vitiligo progression is highly unpredictable. Many patients develop only localized patches that never spread further. Early medical intervention is key to stabilizing the immune system and preventing new patches from forming.

Myth: Vitiligo is just a superficial cosmetic issue.

Fact: While the primary symptom is visual, vitiligo is a systemic autoimmune disease. It carries a heavy psychological burden and can sometimes be associated with other autoimmune conditions, such as thyroid disorders, which require proper medical evaluation.

Myth: People with vitiligo must avoid the sun completely.

Fact: While white patches are prone to sunburn and require sunscreen protection, controlled exposure to specific light wavelengths is actually a primary treatment. Clinical light therapy (NB-UVB and Excimer) safely stimulates dormant pigment cells to bring color back.

Myth: Herbal creams, miracle oils, or strict diets can cure vitiligo in just a few days.

Fact: Repigmentation is a biological cellular process that takes time. Safe, lasting results require a structured medical roadmap. Most patients start seeing initial "freckling" (tiny dots of returning color) in 4 to 8 weeks, with significant repigmentation taking 3 to 6 months.

Myth: Vitiligo patches are painful.

Fact: Vitiligo only affects skin pigmentation. It does not cause physical pain. Occasionally, a patch may feel slightly itchy when it is actively spreading, but the condition is physically painless.

Myth: Vitiligo patches are highly prone to developing skin cancer.

Fact: Interestingly, research indicates that people with vitiligo actually have a lower risk of developing melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers compared to the general population.

Myth: If a parent has vitiligo, their children will definitely inherit it.

Fact: While genetics play a role in making someone susceptible, vitiligo is not directly hereditary in a guaranteed way. The vast majority of children born to parents with vitiligo do not develop the condition themselves.

Myth: Surgery is the only way to get your natural skin color back.

Fact: Surgery (such as Melanocyte Transplantation) is specifically reserved for stable vitiligo that hasn't spread for at least a year. Active, spreading vitiligo is treated with medicines and light therapy, which alone can often fully restore pigment without the need for surgery.

Myth: Taking too much stress directly causes vitiligo to appear.

Fact: Stress alone cannot create vitiligo out of nowhere. However, severe emotional or physical stress can act as a powerful trigger to wake up the condition or cause it to spread in individuals who already have a genetic predisposition.

Myth: Vitiligo only develops in children and young adults.

Fact: While it frequently begins before the age of 30, vitiligo can trigger at any stage of life, affecting any gender, age group, or skin type.
